I don't think I need to rehash everything that has come out about these robocalls in North Carolina. If you're not up to speed, this site is as good as it gets: http://www.southernstudies.org/...
But, look, we are where we are. One fact is indisputable - African Americans have gotten targeted with false and misleading information about what it takes to vote, even those who are registered.
Despite being repeatedly warned by law enforcement to cease and desist, Women's Voices Women Vote has continued to do the same thing, leading to voter confusion, and kept offering the same "Oops" response, while continuing to do the same thing.
There is only one thing to rectify this.
If Women's Voices Women Vote is serious about its mission - increasing voter participation, it is not enough, as Adam B suggests in his front page post, to do some make-up calls. That only will lead to GREATER confusion.
WVWV must make an immediate donation (in the six-figure range), and provide immediate material and services support (such as access to robocalling machines) to a group working on voter turnout in the African American communities during the primary, not just in North Carolina, but in Indiana, as well.
The state chapters of the NAACP in North Carolinaand Indianaare a good place to start.
If there are other groups focusing on turning out the African American vote, list them below in the comments.
If WVWV is serious about undoing the damage they have done, and knowing that they've fouled up - badly - their efforts so far, it simply isn't a reasonable course of action to let them try to disseminate correct information. It's like giving George W. Bush another chance to fix the war in Iraq. The only solution is for the group to immediately fund and provide additional support to groups working to turn out the African American vote.
Should WVWV do so, I think we can all be satisfied that this has been resolved, in a productive manner. If they do not, then I would seriously question their intentions, by allowing the problem to go completely unresolved and uncorrected.
I would encourage everyone to let WVWV know if they support this course of action. With only a few days left until the primary, there is little time for them to waste.
